Living well with COPD
This is a specialised program for those with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. It combines education and exercise to help you manage your breathing, increase stamina and decrease breathlessness.
If you have shortness of breath because of lung problems you may ask yourself:
- Can I exercise or should I avoid exercise because it makes me short of breath?
- How can I get in better shape and have more energy if I am short of breath every time I try to exercise?
Pulmonary rehabilitation is a program of education and exercise that helps you manage your breathing problems, increase your stamina and decrease your breathlessness (dyspnea).
The supervised program will teach you to be “in charge” of your breathing instead of your breathing being “in charge” of you. You will practice new breathing techniques at rest and during your exercise session. The amount of exercise will only increase based on your ability. As your muscles get stronger, you will be more active with less breathlessness and be less tired. Sessions will all contain mobility and flexibility exercise as well as strength and endurance activities to ensure maximum benefit, easing activities of daily living.
Clients attending pulmonary rehabilitation are frequently amazed at how much less short of breath they are!
